Studio Will Dutta presents The Garden of Knowledge [Der Garten der Erkenntnis], a novella by Leopold Andrian (1875–1951).

Written as a young man in Vienna in 1895, the novella exemplifies the general crisis of identity at the fin de siècle and the Decadent preoccupation with absolute knowledge.

Andrian was a close friend of Hugo von Hofmannsthal and he associated with the literary élite in Vienna, including Arthur Schnitzler, Peter Altenberg and Hermann Bahr. The Garden of Knowledge was considered a cult classic by his contemporaries in the innovative literary group loosely called ‘Young Vienna'.

The Studio commissioned Francesca Bugliani Knox to translate the novella into English as the opening act of our new multidisciplinary production, ‘pleasure gardens’.

The novella is available to buy in a hand-finished limited-edition (100 copies) designed by award-winning graphic designer, Russell Warren-Fisher, with a foreword by independent curator, writer and dance artist, Roshanara Adams.

Russell has designed this publication around simple geometries, beautiful typefaces and natural materials to create a decadent special edition. Each book is numbered.

Francesca Bugliani Knox is Honorary Senior Research Associate at UCL and Research Associate at Roehampton University. Her publications include translations into Italian as well as several books and articles on various aspects of English and Italian literature from the Renaissance to the present.

Russell Warren-Fisher designs from the inside out... starting from an 'idea' and taking it all the way to the printed surface. He is an award-winning graphic designer and image maker. Having lectured for many years at the Royal College of Art and exhibited his work in both group and solo shows internationally, his main focus is now branding design for clients such as Orangebox, Orla Keily, Royal Mail and Complicité alongside making limited edition and collectable printed matter.
